Dr. Matthew Thompson

Mercator Fellow from October to December 2023

Matt is a London-based urban geographer who’ll be joining University College London in January 2024 as a Lecturer in Urban Studies. He is currently a Research Fellow at the Wales Institute of Social and Economic Research and Data (WISERD) at Cardiff University, where he is undertaking comparative research on urban innovation in economic development alternatives to neoliberalism across the UK and Europe. He has worked on various research projects, including a Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship on transatlantic municipalism. His research interests include urban political economy, post-growth planning, local state transformation and alternatives to capitalism. Matt is the author of Reconstructing Public Housing: Liverpool’s Hidden History of Collective Alternatives, published open access in 2020 by Liverpool University Press.
